Where it all Started...

'Music For Kenya' was born after I visited Kenya in April 2015, principally as a volunteer with the Gathimba Edwards Foundation. Being a passionate outreach musician in the UK and knowing the power of live music, I was curious as to how it might be received in the poorest parts of Kenya where many of the kids had never seen a white person before, let alone a violin! For this reason I took along my violin and it turned out to be the best thing I have ever done. As you can see from the pictures, the kids couldn't tear their eyes away from me. They were utterly captivated by the alien sound of the violin, and certainly the most attentive audience I have ever played to! Knowing that Western Classical music hasn't travelled to Africa in any major way, and that African music is very rhythm based, I mainly played folk music from Scotland. This enabled me to instigate lots of rhythm games with the kids which went down extremely well.
